Tax Reform

The people of Saint John are living very different lives today than they were 40 years ago, so why does the tax system look the same and deliver its people less?

Change that is needed

  • Lobby the province to end the two separate taxations on properties. Currently, the province levies a tax on top of the local municipality which punishes our property owners. This needs to end. Although the SJ council doesn’t have the authority to end this, as a councillor, Brent will fight for this in every way possible.

  • Lobby the government to get our fair share of the taxes on heavy industry increased to levels comparable across the country and for SJ to receive a larger portion of that tax. Currently, the province has issued major tax reductions and exemptions for heavy industry in our city despite there being no precedent in the rest of our country for such a measure. Beyond this, the majority of industry taxes that are collected by the province never return to support important city infrastructure like fire services, police services, roadways, development, and mitigating the effects of those industries on our city. This needs to change and it starts with local voices refusing to accept the status quo.

  • As a councillor, Brent has committed to putting the necessary pressure on the surrounding communities to pay their fair share towards the amenities and infrastructure costs of our city. We’ve become a sprawling city and we need to find ways to share the burden of that reality fairly so that our city can thrive and pay for the things that give us the most potential to grow and attract new business and residents.
